New York State Education Department Approved Coursework Training in Autism

New York State Education Department approved coursework training in autism. This online, three-hour course will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders and effective treatment practices. A review of diagnostic categories, etiology, and current research will establish the foundation for this course. Key factors that impact individuals within an educational setting will be discussed (e.g. communication, social skills, executive functioning, sensory, and behavioral characteristics) and support strategies and evidence based teaching methodologies will be presented. Registration: $55.00

Participants will be introduced to functional behavior assessments and how they are used to develop positive behavioral support plans. This Training is appropriate for:

Certified administrators newly assigned to special education positions
Those applying for special education certification through the individual transcript
Those applying for a special education certificate through the SED TEACH system
Parents, professionals or anyone else interested in learning more about autism

Our Expert Trainers
Cheryl N. Engel, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who specializes in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). She has worked as a School Psychologist in public schools in New York and as a clinical psychologist in various clinic setting for years over 16 years. Dr. Engel is currently employed as a Clinical/School Psychologist and is the Head of the Clinical Department at the Center for Spectrum Services, where she provides counseling, social skills and behavioral support services to students and transdisciplinary evaluations. In addition, she provides specialized training to staff and serves on the Center for Spectrum Services leadership team. Dr. Engel is approved by the New York State Education Department as a provider of training in the needs of children with autism and is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Sandra Brownsey MS CAS is the Program Coordinator at Center for Spectrum Services in Ellenville. Prior to this role, she worked with children, families, and teachers throughout the Hudson Valley providing special education services, trainings and workshops. In addition to DASA, Ms. Brownsey presents the NY State Education workshop: Introduction to Autism. Ms. Brownsey is a passionate advocate for high quality education for students with special learning needs and an expert in best practices educating young children with autism.
