Remote Learning FAQ

How many hours per day will my child be expected to be in front of a screen?
Students will be asked to engage for a minimum of one half hour of online learning on the days they have been scheduled for remote instruction. This half hour could include remoting into the classroom for a one-on-one lesson, group lesson, or individual or group therapy.

Will electronic devices be provided to those children who don’t have one?
If the family does not have the ability to provide the child with access to an appropriate device, we will work with the school district or Spectrum Service’s own resources to provide a Chromebook.

How will IEP goals be measured in both the extended and remote model?
These will be measured through direct observation, informal evaluation, data collection, and discussion with parents

Will I need to report attendance if my child is unwell and not able to do lessons remotely?
Yes. Please call our Front Desk in Kingston (845-336-2616, press 0) or in Ellenville (845-647-6464) to let us know your child is not feeling well and will not be able to participate in their remote session. The school will need to have a record of absence as we do when school is in full, in-person session. By letting us know early in the day, we can inform the staff member/s scheduled to work with your child.

If parents work, can a specific time be requested for remote portion?
We will try our best to accommodate specific times for families within normal school hours. We will have more than one opportunity during the day for your child to engage with us. We might not be able to accommodate all requests, due to limited staff and limited hours in the day, but we will certainly do our best to be as flexible as we can.

Outside of therapies, what can we expect for the quantity of instructional time with the remote model?
We’re excited to be able to offer daily classroom sessions where children can remote into the classroom for either one-on-one instruction, or pair with another child or join a small group happening in the class. An AM and a PM time will be offered each day.

Can my child attend the two days in person, but opt out of the remote part?
Technically, yes, but then it becomes an attendance issue, as would be required to report the two missed remote days as absences. Chronic absences must be reported to the school district.

If my child is home sick on an in-person day, can they still remote in if they are well enough to learn?
If a child is too sick to come to school, we will assume that the sessions that day are cancelled. If the child is feeling better and you feel a remote session is possible, call your family service coordinator and ask if the session can still occur.

In the Reopening Town Hall meeting, remote, in-school therapies were mentioned. Can you elaborate on that?
At least initially, some of our therapists will be remoting into the classroom to treat students who are attending in-person. This is because, unlike our classroom staff, most of our therapists have students in several cohorts. Therefore, this allows us to limit their exposure to children from more than one classroom. A classroom staff member will be assisting your child when the session occurs.

Will my child’s IEP wording be adjusted due to remote learning?
During this emergency period, guidance from both the State and Federal government allows for flexibility in implementing the IEP, so IEP modifications do not need to be made.
