February Tips

Laurie Hopkins, OT/R, OT/PT Department Head

It’s the month of February and one of the most pervasive symbols of the season is a heart, although some may argue that this year it should be the snowflake.  This month I will be giving a workshop on Stress, Coping, and Creating Greater Resiliency.  I chose the month of February deliberately for this as a means of emphasizing the benefits to one’s own heart both physically and emotionally when steps are taken into account to demystify and proactively approach some if not all the known sources of stress in one’s life.  We will look at the constant of change and facilitating healthier attitudes toward what is inevitable.  There are neurochemical reactions to our thoughts and emotions that create physiological responses in our body which have long and short range implications for our health.  Just having awareness of this can impact on how “you choose” to approach life’s challenges.  Another universal symbol of this month is the rose.  I read something recently that was a variation on the theme of the “glass half full/glass half empty” aphorism and used the imagery of the rose.  I will close with that quote, “Do you cry in anguish over the fact that roses have thorns or do you joyfully celebrate that thorns have roses?”  As they say in the vernacular, “You Choose!”.  Happy Healthy February!
