You gave my son a voice. You taught him how to learn. You taught him how to play. You made him more aware. I am so grateful I can’t put it into words. You made me a better mom. Thank you.Joann

Developmental Evaluations

The Center for Spectrum Services provides developmental evaluations for children ages 18 months to 5 years pending written approval from parents and either the County or the School District official. The initial evaluations are provided free of charge to the family. This comprehensive assessment evaluates all areas of functioning including cognitive skills, motor development, communication, social/emotional development, and adaptive/personal care skills.  The parents have the right to participate in all aspects of the evaluation process.

The results of the evaluation, including a full written report, are shared with parents. Each evaluation is carefully reviewed by a committee. For children in New York State’s Early Intervention Program (ages birth through 3 years), this committee includes the parents, the evaluators, and a  representative from the county of residence. For children of preschool age (ages 3 – 5), a Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) includes the parent, the evaluators, and representatives from the county of residence and the school district.  If the child is eligible for services, the committee determines the type, frequency and location of services, as well as transportation. If appropriate, services can be offered in the home, daycare or preschool, or within a therapeutic setting such as a specialized school program.
