Recognition that each student has a unique profile of strengths and weaknesses is central to the Center for Spectrum Services philosophy.  Expert staff holds high expectations for student and are trained in the latest innovations in educational and sensory techniques proven to be effective in programming for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Research-based strategies are individualized to meet the diverse needs of each student. When appropriate, Spectrum Services’ programming offers academic instruction in language arts and mathematics, complementing more traditional instructional material with hands-on, multi-sensory learning.

A strong emphasis on communication development includes augmentative systems like sign language, picture exchange communication (PECs) and assistive devices. Highly effective teaching procedures taken from the science of behavior analysis are used to teach verbal behavior. The techniques of North Carolina’s TEACCH program promote student progress and increase independence. Individualized and class-wide motivational systems reduce frustration and encourage each student’s best effort. Life skills instruction is tailored for students’ needs. All teaching is designed to promote student generalization into the home and other community settings.
