Ruby Rose Recipient 2015: Kim Osterhoudt

Center for Spectrum Services is delighted to announce Kim Osterhoudt as this year’s Ruby Rose Award recipient. Kim is a New York State certified special educator, but began her career at Spectrum Services in 1995 as a young teacher aide, and steadily grew in accomplishment, with progressive and expanded duties. When Kim’s own children came along, she continued working in our community-based special education program, working one-on-one with younger children on the spectrum. Kim later moved back into center-based teaching, where her career continued its path of successive leadership, and now as a Ruby Rose recipient."Kim is a consummate professional," declares Jamey Wolff, program director and Spectrum Services cofounder. "It's been a pleasure to watch her expertise grow to meet the needs of her students."

Kim's peers and supervisors are also quick to laud her enthusiasm and commitment to her students. "Kim is a dedicated teacher," says supervisor Mary Alice Millham, "and Kim has always gone the extra mile to help our youngest learners get off to a good educational start." Previous Ruby Rose award recipient and Occupational Therapist Assistant ,Kim Denitto agreed, and added, "It is really incredible when you realize how many hats Kim wears every day and how well she wears them."

“I am especially grateful knowing that this comes from my colleagues,” Kim says, “which makes it that much more an honor.” Kim is grateful to all her fellow teachers, but also thankful to her longtime assistant teacher Christina Scism.

Established in 2005 by Spectrum Services parents Bernardo and Barbara Mongil, The Ruby Rose Award is a way for our staff to recognize their coworkers. Named for the Mongils’ daughter, who was one of our very special students, the Ruby Rose Award holds a very special honor. Each year, staff nominates colleagues who have shown exceptional skill and commitment, from which a winner is selected by a committee of their peers. In addition to recognition on a plaque at the school, winners also receive a monetary gift.

Spectrum Services staff, directors, and board all applaud Kim’s dedication and seriousness of purpose to our students, and are delighted at her recognition with this year’s Ruby Rose Award.
