Spectrum Services Spring 2018 Workshop Series
Family members, caretakers, professionals, and paraprofessionals are invited to sign up for our Spring Workshop Series. These include themes such as new developments on autism diagnosis and treatment, and understanding Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

These workshops are offered at no charge to family members of individuals with ASD and their primary caregivers. For professionals and para-professionals, the workshops are 40.00, with a discounted $100 for all 3.

What’s on the Horizon for Autism Diagnosis and Treatment – a Medical Perspective
Thursday, May 10th, 2018 4:00 - 7:00
Presented by Dr. Monica Meyer,  Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician

This workshop will present recent research findings and discuss directions for exploration in our understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder. There will be a review of behavioral diagnoses that often accompany autism and their medical management. Questions will be welcomed.

Part 1 - Making Sense of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): In the Home and Classroom (See Part 2 below)

In the workshop, participants will gain a greater understanding of applied behavior analysis and how it relates to improving challenging behaviors as well as building valuable skills.  Strategies and examples will be beneficial for parents, caregivers, educational staff and all those who interact with individuals on the autism spectrum.

We’ll discuss:

  • The difference between form vs. function of behaviors
  • The important role of reinforcement
  • Ways to increase varieties of reinforcers
  • How to build positive rapport necessary for teaching skills
  • The difference between intensive teaching and Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

Part 2 - Making Sense of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): In the Home and Classroom
Thursday, May 24th, 2018     4:00 - 7:00

This workshop will focus on the importance of building a language system for the child.  We’ll discuss strategies and teaching techniques.  Parents, caregivers, and classroom staff will leave with an in-depth understanding of:

  • The important role of language development
  • Weighing options:  Vocal, Sign Language, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Voice Output
  • Teaching procedures and error correction (Sign and PECS)
  • Expanding language to the natural environment and other settings
